Spoorzone: From Closed Industrial Area to Urban Hotspot

Tilburg’s Spoorzone was once a restricted area, exclusively for the Dutch Railways. Since the 19th century, it housed workshops where locomotives and train carriages were repaired and maintained. The site symbolized Tilburg’s industrial boom but remained off-limits to the public. High fences and security made it a mysterious place where outsiders had no reason to venture.

By the 1990s, most railway activities had been relocated, leaving behind an abandoned and neglected site. However, the city of Tilburg recognized the potential of this historic location and developed a vision to breathe new life into it. Instead of demolition, the focus shifted to repurposing the space while preserving its industrial character.

One of the most striking transformations is the LocHal, a massive locomotive shed now serving as a multifunctional building. Within its walls, you’ll find an innovative library, co-working spaces for startups, and venues for cultural events. Alongside the LocHal, the Spoorzone boasts numerous attractions, including trendy eateries and creative studios. It has also become a hub for tech companies and events like the Roadburn Festival, drawing thousands of visitors.

The Spoorzone blends history with modernity and has become an indispensable part of Tilburg. Walking paths, green spaces, and striking architecture make the area appealing to both residents and visitors. It stands as a symbol of urban renewal and an example of how industrial heritage can be repurposed to enrich a city. For Tilburgers, it’s now a vibrant space that honors their past while looking toward the future.
