The Evolution of Strijp-S

Strijp-S, once the industrial epicenter of Eindhoven, has come a long way from a closed factory complex to a vibrant creative district. In the early 20th century, the area was owned by Philips, which developed its most secretive and advanced technologies here. Strijp-S was known as “the forbidden city” because it was heavily guarded and accessible only to Philips employees. 

Within the walls of Strijp-S, radios, televisions, and even X-ray equipment were produced. The iconic Klokgebouw served as a production facility, while the Natural Sciences Laboratory (NatLab) focused on innovative research. The production and development at Strijp-S were crucial to Philips’ rise as a global leader. 

When Philips relocated its production to cheaper locations in the 1990s, Strijp-S fell into disrepair. Empty factories and abandoned spaces dominated the area. Instead of demolishing the buildings, Eindhoven chose to repurpose Strijp-S. Collaborating with developers and creatives, the city worked on a transformation that preserved the industrial heritage while giving it a modern twist. 

Today, Strijp-S is one of Eindhoven’s most dynamic districts. The former factory buildings have been converted into lofts, creative studios, and event spaces. The Klokgebouw now hosts concerts, festivals, and exhibitions. The Vershal het Veem offers a culinary experience with local and artisanal products. Strijp-S has also become an innovation hub, attracting numerous startups and tech companies. 

Strijp-S is now a cultural hotspot. Events like Dutch Design Week draw tens of thousands of visitors annually. The district is also a popular gathering place, with cafes, art galleries, and green spaces creating a relaxed atmosphere. 

The transformation of Strijp-S showcases how a city can embrace its industrial past. Instead of erasing history, Eindhoven reinvented the area. Strijp-S combines Philips’ legacy with a forward-looking vision, making it a unique part of the city. It stands as a living testament to Eindhoven’s innovative spirit and a symbol of renewal and creativity.
