The Veluwe: Nature in Abundance

The Veluwe, one of the largest and most diverse natural areas in the Netherlands, is just a stone’s throw from Apeldoorn. This vast landscape, stretching over more than 1,000 square kilometers, offers a breathtaking combination of forests, heathlands, sand dunes, and ponds. It is a paradise for nature lovers and a popular destination for day-trippers and holidaymakers.

The Kroondomein Het Loo, which borders the city, forms an important part of the Veluwe. This area, once laid out as a royal hunting ground, is known for its rich flora and fauna. Deer, wild boar, and red deer roam freely in this protected landscape, and with a little luck, you can spot them while hiking or cycling. The paths are well-maintained and lead visitors along peaceful forest trails and open fields, ideal for escaping the hustle and bustle of daily life.

The Veluwe also offers countless recreational activities. Walking and cycling are popular, but horseback riding and mountain biking are also options. For families, there is an abundance of picnic areas, playgrounds, and child-friendly hiking routes. In the fall, the area is particularly magical, with golden leaves and the impressive sounds of bellowing deer.

In addition to its natural beauty, the Veluwe is rich in culture. The Kröller-Müller Museum, with its world-renowned collection of Van Gogh paintings, is located in the middle of the park and attracts art lovers from around the world. The Veluwe effortlessly combines relaxation, adventure, and culture, making it an indispensable element of Apeldoorn’s versatility. It is a place where you can get lost for days in the tranquility and beauty of nature.
